Defending the Coast: Living Beach, Dunes and Community in Sisal

Coastal dunes are more than just sand and vegetation: they are key ecosystems that protect our shores and harbor unique biodiversity. However, they face threats such as uncontrolled urbanization, tourism, and the introduction of invasive species.

In Sisal, Yucatán, we work to restore these ecosystems by removing invasive species, replanting native vegetation, and conducting environmental education with the community. This process has been challenging; as a group emerging from academia, we’ve had to build trust in a community with a complex relationship with science and conservation.

Through the project, we’ve managed to engage youth, women, and other community sectors in protecting their environment. In 2025, with support from the Restoration Stewards program, we aim to expand our actions, strengthening the bond between people and nature.

Restoring dunes isn’t just an ecological action; it’s an investment in the future of our coasts and their inhabitants. Join us on this journey and help us redefine the vision of dunes in Mexico!
