Over the last 10 years, forest fires have damaged the Walter Thilo Deiniger Park’s woodland cover, wildlife and rivers, affecting the surrounding communities. The year 2020 was the first year that the park did not suffer fires, thanks to the “forest and water” program, a restoration work that ASISTEDCOS Foundation has been applying in natural protected areas. The project aims to plant one hectare of land with native trees and build water retention structures in the soil; and to organize awareness-raising activities in the communities and design audiovisual material on forest fires and good agricultural practices, so they can educate people about the importance of conservation and sustainability.
